Is Dairy Bad For You?

I read in a report that dairy raises acid levels in your body, which hurts its ability to heal itself and fight things like cancer. I realize there is something to this and have heard things like this before. I also realize there are probably some benefits to dairy. would like to hear from both sides of this debate!

Dr. Oz has a quote somewhere where he says that "milk is not a health food." From what I understand, if you eat a typical American diet of processed foods and lots of meat, you diet will be low in calcium.

But when you start to eat a diet with better foods- what Dr. Fuhrman and others call "nutrient dense"- you will get plenty of calcium and won't NEED dairy. The argument by the pro milk industry is that you need dairy. If you eat the right diet this is not the case.

For example, a 4 ounce serving of collared greens has the same calcium as a cup of milk.

In terms of the question "is dairy bad for you"- you generally want to limit animal protein in general as well as avoid high fat dairy products which are strongly linked to heart disease and cancer.

Additionally research is now pointing to a link between prostate cancer and milk. One study showed that men who drink milk have a 70% higher chance of getting cancer.

But if you eat plenty of veggies and keep dairy to a minimum you will probably be ok. Just my view, you want to focus on adding the good stuff.
