Relationship between Phytochemicals and Muscle Soreness
I just wrote the following small article on phytochemicals- what they are and how they help your overall health as well as helping to reduce inflammation. This was prompted by something someone sent me to help with my soreness after some long distance running.

Thanks for the article Habib,
My naturapath turned me on to the benefits of tart cherries last year. They definitely have anti-inflammatory properties(similar to TNF blockers and COX-2 inhibitors) in addition to hosting a myriad of other health benefits... One of the most interesting being cutting belly fat (http://www.natural-recipes.com/author/laurel/).

Interesting quote from that article- especially for those people who have been told that juice and fruit is bad. Note the link between cherries and heart disease and diabetes:
"April 7 — Tart cherries – frequently sold dried, frozen or in juice – may have more than just good taste and bright red color going for them, according to new animal research from the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center.
Rats that received whole tart cherry powder mixed into a high-fat diet didn’t gain as much weight or build up as much body fat as rats that didn’t receive cherries. And their blood showed much lower levels of molecules that indicate the kind of inflammation that has been linked to heart disease and diabetes. "

I would caution that not all fruit juices are created equally. The founder of the cherry juice product that was recommended to Habib partnered with the food science people at Cornell (I believe) to figure out how to extract the cherry juice while preserving the beneficial qualities of cherries. So, it's a product that is going to be different than those cherry juices on the shelves of your local grocer.
