Popcorn

Okay, I have always heard that while you are dieting you should eat air popped popcorn - YUCK! What's the big deal in microwavable popcorn? The kind I like has only 35 calories per cup. There doen't seem to be a problem to me. And it tastes awesome!

since 1 cup of air popped popcorn is (according to the calorie counter on this site) 31 calories... I say for 4 calories eat the stuff with flavor and save yourself a craving later because the air popped is bland and you want something tastey.

most microwave popcorn has transfat, which is bad for you.

airpopped tastes fine to me, especially if i toss in some flavoring, like molly mcbutter or, my favorite, chili powder and tabasco.

You can buy popcorn kernels at the store - then you have two options of popping them yourself - you can fry them in oil on the stove - or you can heat them up in a machine. In the machine, hot air cooks the kernels and makes them pop, on the stove hot grease cooks the kernels and makes them pop. Obviously the no grease solution in the healthiest.

personally, i can't stand the taste of microwave popcorn. the fake butter/oil that they use is gross. i much prefer home-popped. i do use oil on the stove because I don't have an air popper.

How come air-popped pop corn has 31 calories per cup, but butter light 94% fat free microwave popcorn has 20? The regular, not light, microwave varieties have 35!

You can also "air pop" regular popcorn kernels by putting some in a brown paper lunch bag and stapling it shut with one staple (really won't kill your microwave) and putting it in the microwave. It ends up wasting some kernels, b/c if you wait for them all to pop, most will be burnt, so timing varies, but, if you don't have an air-popper and want to see if you like the taste of plain popcorn before you buy one, it works.
