cardio & aerobic activity for weightloss??

I'm trying to figure out maximum impact for weightloss with about 30 min. six times a week. I'm 5'5" and weigh 185. I've tried elliptical but my feet start falling asleep about 20 min. into it. I'm trying the treadmill now but the shins are killing me. Any ideas on what I can try and how it's worked for you? I need variety so I don't get too bored.
