Questioning whether to Fat Smash...

I am restarting my weight loss journey after losing 27 pounds. I want to lose another 12 to reach my goal. Before, I simply watched my calories (less than 1400 a day) and ate as balanced of a diet as possible, and lost around 2 pounds a week almost every week. However, I am concerned that because I have less to lose, it will be harder to do by simply cutting calories. PT seems to be a big fan of Fat Smash so I was considering doing Phase I at some point as a kind of "reset" before going back into a sensible, non-restrictive, lower-calorie diet.

All that to say... I am curious about what exactly makes Fat Smash "work". I am a big believer in "calories in, calories out, that's it" and so I am skeptical about the "magic" of not eating certain foods and eating others. Is the reason you lose so much with Fat Smash that you are simply eating less calories because the only foods you are allowed to eat are low calorie? I have a hard time imaging being able to get up to 1400 calories with only the foods allowed on Phase I, even if I ate all day long. If that's the only trick, then why not just restrict your calories? Or is there something really special about Fat Smash besides making you eat less? I know the results are great and its a healthy plan, but couldn't it just be water weight from such a drastic change in diet? I'm not worried about gaining it all back because I wouldn't go back to an unhealthy diet after Phase I, though I probably wouldn't follow Phase II to the letter. I am just wondering if its worth all the agony of deprivation for the results!
