helping hubby

I've been gently (too gently...?) encouraging my husband to get in shape over the last several months. He's only slightly out of shape, not FAT, but he's getting older, he drinks a lot of beer, he doesn't exercise. I'm worried about his health, as it is now and as it will be in a few years and over time. And, to be honest, I'd like him to look a little more fit - he's getting a beer gut and a double chin.
We moved to a new town and I took that opportunity to find new doctors for both of us. (He mentioned casually that he ought to get a checkup, and I RAN with that!) So his physical was the other day and I'm pretty annoyed at the doctor. He told my husband to cut down on his drinking (good!!), but didn't seem to emphasize the importance of exercise and/or cardio. He wants my husband to lose 20 pounds, and my husband is now under the impression that he can do that by just altering his eating. Of course, it's possible, but my husband is not a dieter, and the changes he'll make will be minimal. And even if he loses, the weight, his heart won't be much healthier, he won't be in better "shape."
Does anyone have any advice for me? I know some men are very much into exercising and eating right. That is not my husband. He is open to a healthier lifestyle, but how do I encourage him to exercise without being pushy. He told the doctor he likes to do yardwork (which is great exercise), but winter is coming and I don't see him out there raking leaves under 2 feet of snow.
Oh, and while we're at it, what's a good calorie amount for a man to shoot for? He's 6'1" and (currently) 220 lbs.
I'll post more questions as I think of them, but any advice would be appreciated.
