Is it offensive to say "curvy" if you mean fat?

On Facebook there is a group called "Real women have curves". I joined this group, and to be honest I did think it was ok, as a bigger girl (size 16-18) to say I am curvaceous. Some people posted some quite nasty comments, aimed at all bigger people, basically saying they should not be saying they are curvy if it is used as a politer way of saying overweight. I didn't realise I was offending anyone. It's a support group for women who are larger, but some of the guys who post on there are saying that, by people describing themslves as "curvy", when they are overweight, they are sugar coating the truth. One guy said you should be honest with yourself and others, or you won't do anything about your situation. At first hearing this I was a bit offended I must admit, especially since one guy directed a reply of this nature specifically to me (they have a discussion board for this group). I then wondered if there is some truth to this and the language you use to describe yourself does make you complacent and unwilling to do anything about your situation. However, "fat" is a negative word, and to outwardly be telling others you are fat suggests a lack of self esteem. What are your views? Btw, people seem to think that people who are overweight never get off the sofa. I love going to dance classes and aerobics, but for the last 2 years I have had ezcema really bad and when I get hot and sweat the itching is unbearable. I don't go as much as I should due to this, but I wish some people wouldn't be so judgemental.
