Chocolate May be Good For You (in moderation of course)

The American Chemical Society's newsletter has an article discussing recent published research that shows that chocolate is rich in healthful antioxidants similar to produce, tea, and red wine. Of course candy that is high in sugar and fat negates the benefits of the chocolate, but a little dark chocolate (more chocolate, less sugar) now and then looks like a good choice.

The doctor on Oprah said to eat 1 ounce a day of chocolate made with 70$ or more cocoa solids - that means less sugar and fat. Trader Joes has this chocolate in the large bars; you get all of the yummy chocolate cocoa taste that you crave. Sometimes I have to add a raising or dried cranberry after a bite but a little of this goes a long way.

I eat a square of the 85% Lindt chocolate almost every day :) I nibble on it to make it last longer.

My husband and I buy individually wrapped chocolates and have one a day after dinner. We satisfy our sweet tooth while not over doing it.........

Chocolate covered espresso beans

Starbucks sells a small box of dark chocolate covered espresso beans. The box is 2 servings and 170 calories per serving. I estimate that 1 serving is about1 15 beans. Because the espresso flavor is so strong, I find I am satisfied with just 5 beans at a time. I think most dark chocolate fits the 70% cocoa guideline.

Watch out for those chocolate covered coffe beans - they can be dynamite on the caffiene! Whew! If I ate what they call a "serving" I would be on the ceiling. I find that about 5 is like a cup of stong coffee. Sure, low on calories, but be careful!

But on the plus side - these make a great little pick me up when you are sitting in a boring meeting and are craving a cup of coffee to stay awake, but can't get out.

I like to melt dark chocolate and dip strawberries in it, then place them in the fridge. A few are a great dessert after dinner, a snap to make and you get some fruit along with it.
