The Dreaded Grocery Shopping Trip

I'm trying to prepare for grocery shopping tomorrow and I know the event will be a slippery one to navigate without veering off-course. I'm wishing I had a gas mask to keep out the wonderful smells, and blinkers to keep me from enjoying all the beautiful food! On the other hand, I do so love to stroll around the market ... grocers love us (and our money, i suppose) ... maybe I need to be more strategic about strolling in low-fat aisles.

Have you ever made a change to your grocery shopping habits that really helped you from bringing bad foods home?

Yes. You make a list of what you need, not want, and you stick to it. You gradually start stocking up on healthy staples so you don't stand at your refrigerator or cabinets wondering what you have. You gradually get rid of all the bad stuff. Some people get rid of it right away and just trash it. But remember that a habit like grocery shopping will probably take a while to get used to changed shopping habits. It's a work in progress. You will continue to keep learning about new foods and new recipes that are good for you. I know you can do it! Just remember baby steps. If you get overwhelmed you may get discouraged and want to quit... but don't!

My tips are just about the same you should definetely make a list, but also try to avoid the center isles if you are just shopping for yourself. The outer isles of anygrocery store tend to be the best beside the bakery of course.

I used to stop in nightly to my local grocery store and purchase salad "stuff" from their salad bar. Sometimes I would spend an hour or more at the store, after I made my salad........I would constantly talk myself in to purchasing numerous junk food items and then talk myself out of it.......it was really funny, that that little voice is so powerful! My best advise is to have a list and stick to it, and most important don't listen to that "bad talk" in your head, just don't pick it up, just pick up the stuff on the list and go.

Where on Earth do you shop? My grocery store doesn't smell like anything. Well, occasionally it smells like floor soap, but not like food.

EAT FIRST. For the love of all that is holy, do not shop hungry. :c)

Do not give in to special offers on snacks that you would not otherwise buy!!! Even if they're dirt cheap. Even if they're paying you to eat them!!!

go RIGHT after lunch or dinner. GO when you don't even want to think about food. And have a LIST! Don't go without a list!

Yayyyyyyyyyyyy! I took all your advice to eat first and take the list and it worked!!! :) I tend to just forget to eat first, and thought I'd had the "list in my head" down cold, but alas, I think I was in denial and had slid allll over the place, usually coming home having talked myself into all sorts of stuff.

Wow you guys, thanks!! You made a huge difference :)
