Oh wow...I am a smoker, and it really suppresses my appetite, so I can see how it would be easy to just have a cig and a diet soda and be done with it.

I had a girlfriend (we are no longer friends) that lived off of cigarettes, Diet Coke, coffee, and bags of frozen vegetables. I used to think she was glamorous because she was so thin and always looked good. But then I started noticing the bad skin, the dark gums, the un-toned body. I started noticing her binge eating and erratic behavior. She refuses to change and says that you only live once and should look good doing it. I know now that she is unhealthy and heading for a lot of trouble...she is getting married soon and wants to have kids...she's in for a rude awakening.

healthy is good - that is not healthy

well check out isabelle here.

I am a guy and I can say she looks awful, she ate like that and looks much worse than being 50 lbs overweight - very unhealthy / unattractive looking. terrible really - at least try 800 healthy calories a day or your goal is not actually looking good.

I know she is recovering now but...gross !

I find it interesting that PP chooses to focus on Isabelle's appearance rather than her health. Small wonder that women are driven to any extreme to look the way they think they should.

?

what a strange comment 12:11. Not sure I understand you. Also pretty sure you didn't understand me.

She is so skeletal it is shocking. you would have to be blind not to focus on her radically unhealthy appearance if you saw her, yet this is what many people think is attractive to people...thus the diet coke and cigarette approach which is even worse. I am just saying that it is not, so if you think that is your goal and you are eating four cornflakes and a square of chocolate like Izzie here, you are mistaken about what you are doing making you attractive.

I tried to eat 1050 healthy calories for a while and it was not the most healthy for me because of the amount of exercise I do, but only for a little while to slim down at the end for four weeks, but I wouldn't do it again because I really lost some muscle. What the OP is talking about is just totally dumb - IF you were going to go HARDCORE low on calories you could do like 800 of really healthy and nourishing stuff, but never diet coke and cigarettes. That is how "models" die:

http://www.nbc10.com/health/10339022/detail.html

- to answer the OP's actual question - I really think very few models would actually follow that because they would look like crap and models are usually vain enough not to want to die or look awful.

I realized it was a guy posting about Isabelle. My point is that this woman, like many other women, went to extremes to make herself look a certain way and still probably never felt it was good enough. Then a man comes along and posts about how disgustingly unattractive she looks (called her unattractive, said she looked awful, called her "gross.") Even in this, when she is obviously very sick and very distressed and needing help, even in this she is STILL judged first on her appearance. As long as women are judged first and foremost on their looks, some will continue to have these problems with self-image and going to unhealthy extremes to achieve a certain look.

No, it doesn't look pretty and a healthy person can realize that. These women are obviously not healthy in mind and body, but it's not totally their fault.

hey

Are you even reading my posts?

I'm sorry, but your whole concept that men could stop judging on appearance is fatally flawed - we are totally hard wired that way. That will NEVER change. Even our wives know that...

The thing is - it isn't us. A guy being naturally highly interested in a woman's physical attractiveness isn't creating anorexia - it is the fashion magazines and other women and our hyper materialist visual culture that tell them that they should look a certain way that guys wouldn't even find attractive. most guys are not yelling at women to lose weight - we aren't that stupid - it really isn't us saying.

yes I am "judging" her appearance - because it tells me she has considerable mental illness - pitiable - yes - wrong for me to notice and point out to you ladies out there that guys DO NOT even like that look - nope.

What do YOU say is more to blame here:
-my natural (natural and generally benign) interest in looks
or
-a mega billion dollar fashion industry that screams "THIN!" all day and night ? ?

5:04 I think you hit it right on. IMO most men are WAY less critical of women than women are of women!

Models will also eat toilet paper. It fills them up and comes out the other end no calories.

5:04--did you read what I wrote? I don't recall blaming men. I did say women are judged on their looks (and they undeniably are). You don't need to take it personally and culture at large is probably the reason why you would jump on criticizing her looks first, not because you're hard-wired. I don't see the benevolence in you pointing out that you don't find her attractive, though. Not only do I think it's irrelevant, but any healthy individual realizes this without you pointing it out.

Blame? / point / Victoria's

Just having fun... no hard feelings, okay?
" I don't recall blaming men" ?
"... a man comes along and posts about how disgustingly unattractive she looks ...she is STILL judged first on her appearance. As long as women are judged first and foremost on their looks, some will continue to have these problems"
- that really sound like you are blaming me there

okay so my point was (the OP is asking if models eat no calories and cigarettes) that yes, people do that kind of stuff, but it is foolish since starving yourself does not have the result that they would want which is looking good.

(- and as to the "hard-wiring" I know a lot of married guys and girls and have read lots of good books about marriage. In a marriage the guy like to see his wife look sexy, that is why there is Victoria's and not Victor's. It is not bad - it is just the way we are built from the beginning of time for some unknown reason. I married my wife because of love and more because of her awesome character than looks (she is pretty though), but I am still more interested in her looks than she is in mine - all my married guy friend would agree - in fact we just had a conversation about it last night... )

but we digress... :)

There's a difference between judging a woman on her looks, and judging her looks. To ignore that difference as someone seems to have is ridiculous.

No one is making value judgments based on looks. Everyone has the right to judge and notice appearances. If individuals can't separate their appearance from their value, they need to seek counsellling- not those who have an opinion about other people's appearance.
