Carbs

I need some help and advice please! :)

I have been counting calories for months, but feel that I need to step it up more to try and avoid empty calories and in turn hopefully see some better results than I have been. I was reading around last night, and decided to try and start counting carbs and grams of fat as well. I read a study where the women ate about 1240 calories a day, 97 carbs, about 95 grams of protein and I believe it might've been about 45 - 50 grams of fat per day.

Once I started calculating, I was still good on calories, low on grams of fat, but the carbs were adding up like crazy. But nothing on my log was really 'bad'.. sure I had a bagel and LF cream cheese but by the evening, I had over 200 carbs.

Are they REALLY super important?
I know many diets try and avoid them, but do you think if I just kept track of calories and grams of fat, everything else should fall into place? I think if I started obsessing over carbs.. well, it wouldnt be good.
