Target Heart Rate ? Is my workout effective ?

This is a long question to explain clearly.

Each day that I visit the gym I make it a goal to burn 500 claories before my workout is finished. I have a heart rate monitor that calculates calories burned. On days that I am lifting weights I can spend most of my time below my target heart rate. I have a question about that.

The heart rate monitor is still calculating burned calories during my lifting sessions...which makes sense. During a normal 30 minute session I burn about 150 to 200 calories. I burn about 100 calories during my 10 minute warm up. Which means that I'm only spending 20 minutes in each workout actually doing cardio at or above my target heart rate.

In total I've burned 500 calories but is this effective for weight loss ?

Should I be spending more time doing cardio above my target heart rate ?

I don't want to waste workouts.
