Need more exercise? Go into your community!

It has occurred to me that one of the reasons I gained weight is that once I got sick and then was injured, I quit going out into my city as often. I was always going to the Second Saturday Art Walk (there's one tonight), went to a lot of community events here in the suburbs and also do volunteer work with the homeless, especially battered women and children, going so far as to tromp through homeless camps in the middle of the night to take our annual official head count of the homeless. (Having once been homeless myself, I'm very good at finding homeless camps - even the well-hidden ones.)

Today is Dogoween at my local PetSmart. It is about 1 mile up the road from me. I am walking there and going to see all the cute doggehs in their little costumes! Then I'll walk back and that will make 2 miles of exercise today.

Tonight is Second Saturday Art Walk. If walking to Dogoween doesn't slaughter my hip (shouldn't, I don't think - it's been pretty good lately) I will take the light rail to the part of town where there are only a couple galleries on the walk, but those few blocks turn into one big, rolling, unofficial street festival. Musicians on the sidewalks, people hawking homemade tshirts and jewelry and all sorts of goodies from their front porches or the park. Any activity is good activity.

Get out into your community. Walk around. What is especially fun/cool/interesting about your city? Walk to it if you can. If there are no community events within walking distance, drive to a nearby point and then walk to it.

Here's another idea that I think goes on in every community in the US (if you live here) - Oktoberfest. You don't have to eat the potato pancakes and drink the beer, but there's nothing stopping you from jumping up on the table and doing the Chicken Dance! Remember, any activity is good activity. The more movement involved, the better.

LGT 2nd Saturday Info/Map for my fellow Sacramentans! Hope to see you there! (The galleries in the DPH are especially fun! Don't let that part of town scare you - I lived there once and I'm still alive!)
