I sabotaged myself

I've been working out at the gym regularly (3-5 days per week) for around 3 1/2 months. I did weight training (alternating upper & lower body), mixed-up cardio (sometimes 20 mins of intervals, sometimes 45 mins on crosstrainer, etc.), and abs each day I was there. Based on simply visual observation (before & after photographs and friends & family comments) I did gain significant muscle. However, because I didn't do enough to modify my diet, I lost a very negligible amount (if any at all) of fat. My starting measurements were 34-29-37...and that they remain. The fat layer covering my stomach has not budged, and my thighs are mostly unchanged (aside from the muscle).

I started by cutting out the processed foods, sugars, etc. and going to a pretty clean diet. Unfortunately, I did not weigh/measure my food and routinely ate too much of everything. That's been my problem for years...instead of eating reasonable portions, I stuff myself to bursting---even with "good" food. I saw initial results everywhere but my abdominal area (where the women in my family store fat). I got discouraged and continued eating too much of the healthy stuff PLUS added back in all of the bad stuff I'd eaten before: popcorn w/ butter, cake, soda, white rice, etc.

My friends think I have a good body, and I am reasonably thin, but the fat covering my stomach, especially the below-belly-button bulge, makes me look 3 months pregnant. We are going on a beach vacation in a week, and my whole motivation for joining the gym was to finally get the typical hot bikini body. I really didn't have that far to go: I'm 28 yrs old, 5'5", 130 lbs, and as stated above 34-29-37. I could have done it, but because I didn't feel like doing the work that was required, I'm basically where I started.

If you feel this applies, take my advice: for some of you girls, for those "last 10 pounds," you ARE what you eat!
