The Biggest Loser
I get so motivated watching this show and wondered if there are other people out there that love it as much as I do?
Wed. Mar 19, 9:31am
Ironically, despite the fact that I have never seen the show, I started a B.L. contest at my office. It is going great so far & together people have lost dozens of lbs of weight, so that is great. Is it true that girls never win?
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 10:43 AM
No, no one likes this show. That's why there are a dozen previous threads on the subject in this forum that you failed to search for.
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 11:11 AM
Wow, ha ha 11:11 you are mean ;^)
I think there should be a notice from PT above the start a new thread button warning that if you start something without checking the search you will be laughed at. Good idea huh?
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 11:20 AM
I like the show, but lately i am getting really tired of the way they plug in their sponsors and things like that.
What are commercials for!!!!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 11:56 AM
11:56...I understand from a recent conversation with a network exec that product placement is the future of TV because of TiVo (which, since I don't have it, I assume allows you to program out the commercials somehow). Not a trend I like at all...it strikes me as a pretty insidious form of brainwashing.
My other complaint about the show is that, like every maturing reality show, the producers are manipulating/loosely scripting big chunks of it to boost entertainment value. I think that's how they've turned a 1-hour show into 2 hours. So I've gone from being a rabid BL addict to not caring if I miss the first 30-60 minutes. But I never miss the Last Chance Workout and the weigh-in!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 12:11 PM
wow, sorry I brought it up! I was on another weight loss site and they were all talking about all the details of the show and thought someone on this site might have been motivated too. Guess we don't need that here!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 2:43 PM
I LOVE the show and this is the first season I've watched. The product placements actually crack me up - like Bob and Dan discussing the One a Day vitamins last night. I just watched The Truman Show the other day and a funny part of the movie was people slipping in product endorsements and it reminded me of that.
And it never ceases to amaze (and completely captivate) me - that you can take 45 minutes to have 7 people weigh in! Oh, I'm hooked!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 2:51 PM
2:43 - make it your mission to ignore the irrelevant, unhelpful, chastising responses you get on here. If we all did that maybe they'd go away! Post whatever you want - even if it's been brought up 100x before!!
I'm a huge fan of the show!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 2:56 PM
I love the show and even record it to DVD. I have 3 seasons so far. It is so inspiring. Even if I can't lose as quickly or work out as hard I see it can be done and even with people who have major amounts of weight to lose.
I think the biggest thing that I have gotten from the show so far is to be proud of your accomplishments. I have lost 190 ponds so far and really didn't see it as a big deal until about a month ago. Yet when they got to having lost 50 pounds they think that is a major big deal. And I do too, for them. I get to being a cry baby most episodes there is something that touches my heart.
I remember last season I wanted so bad to be in the place where I could be dieting along with them but I just wasn't there yet. So glad I am now.
Loved Tim Gunn last night. Loved it!
Oh and the product endorsements. Yes it is a bit cheesy but some people don't know the need to suppliment your diet with vitamins. Or how aboout Jillian showing them how to cook with the zip loc steamer bags. I have them and never use them. Just reminded me of it.
I wish they would spend more time talking about what they eat so we can have a better idea. Even if it is endorsing one product over another.
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 4:02 PM
I am the 11:56 poster and I dont think i was being "annoying, or chastising" I said that I like the show, but I also mentioned something about the show that I didnt like. I really dont tihnk I was contributing to the conversation in a negative way.
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 5:47 PM
I also wish they would focus more on what they eat.
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 5:48 PM
OMG! Thank you, I knew there were some positive, motivated people out there!
Congratulations on your 190 lb loss!!!! That is absolutely awsome!!!!!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 5:51 PM
Totally LOVE the show. The endorsements don't really bother me because it actually gives me ideas. I tend to ignore commercials any more because a lot of them are about fast food joints and that is what I'm trying to avoid, so putting the "healthy" stuff in the show helps me a lot. I so agree that they should put more about what they eat!!!! Maybe some recipes?
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 7:31 PM
Hey 11:11 - Over here.
I love the show too and I am just curious about something.
Say I am at work. And I (W) have a discussion with someone (X). We talk about the basketball game last night. The next day Y talks to Z about the same game.
Will you come along and tell Y & Z that they have no right to their discussion because someone else talked about it yesterday.
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 8:08 PM
oh i do i wish they had it in canada and for a bit younger people. i would be on it in a second. no matter what the cost. or what i had to do
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 8:29 PM
I thought they had a Canadian version, but I could be wrong. Some of the people on this season and actually in past seasons have been young - very early 20's
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 9:23 PM
I guess that is Australia Biggest Loser, not Canada. Sorry!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 9:27 PM
I love the show. I got teary last night. They looked soooo good! I want to look that good. Their transformations were amazing. Brittany looked awesome. She got voted off and still worked her butt off and is going to look great I am sure at the finale. I think they all are doing awesome and YES it inspires the heck out of me. I wish that I could drop the pounds like they do.
LOL too about the taking 45 min to weigh seven people!! Did you ever notice too the gasps they show Jillian or Bob with right before they go to commercial and you think its a bad gasp and then it turns out good? Too funny. I also cried about the one guy (one of the brothers) who was bawling over his wife coming. I want a guy to love me like that!! :( I am a single mom. That was kinda cool. So sweet!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 10:11 PM
But he just came back on after having gone home. He acted like he hadn't seen her in forever, and it was just the week before he was home!
Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 11:44 PM
Maybe he was repsonding to being made over, finally wearing clothes he felt he looked good in, etc. He's not one to shy away from the tears, though, is he?
Thursday, March 20, 2008, 9:56 AM
God, none of them are. Floods of waterworks over every little thing.
Thursday, March 20, 2008, 10:18 AM
At this point, I think the man tears are kind of funny, b/c they're so profuse. But, really - can you imagine being away from your loved ones for this long?? Even if you saw them two weeks ago - that's a long time!!
Back to the OP's question - I'm amazed at what they can accomplish & I'm so inspired. I think it's awesome. They've completely changed the course of their lives in a mere 10-12 weeks. And if you look at the one guy who got voted off relatively early - he went on to lose a total of 100 pounds - virtually all on his own! That's when I look at myself and think - what the hell am I waiting for??
Thursday, March 20, 2008, 3:30 PM
BL
I am always amazed at the amount of weight they lose a week. Im always thinking what the heck is holding me back? How can i lose 15 - 19 lbs in a week? I tune in for the last min work out and weigh in, anymore, because I dont really like all the snipe ing . The weigh in does take forever though.
Friday, March 21, 2008, 10:13 AM
10:13 - remember, ALL they do is workout! That is their full time job right now and unless you have 100 pounds to lose like they did - no way you're gonna lose or should lose that much weight in a week! I'm just wondering what's holding me back from losing 1 pound!!
Friday, March 21, 2008, 10:16 AM
LOL 10:13 that was funny... whats holding me back from losing one pound! ?
Friday, March 21, 2008, 1:44 PM
Hey, they finally talked about food this episode! That was interesting. It was also interesting to hear that not eating complex carbs probably interfered with weight loss for one of the guys last week. I do wish they'd talk more about how they figure how much those guys need to eaet, what they eat, etc.
Love the Weight Control Oatmeal and 100 calorie popcorn plugs - too funny.
Boohoo - very sad to see Dan go. He's looking very cute these days!
Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 5:52 PM
i thought dan was cocky and mean
Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 6:38 PM
I thought Dan was very cocky last night. I am SO GLAD the women were the top losers last night. I really think Brittany was affecting the women's morale with her comments that women can't lose like men can. She's been off for one week and look what the women accomplished! I love this show.
Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 6:45 PM
I think Dan's funny. His comments about being the smartest guy in the house were all in fun, I thought. I don't find anyone particularly annoying, but I am rooting for the girls!
Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 6:50 PM
I don't follow this show, but I could have sworn Dan got voted off before...am I wrong?!?
Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 7:01 PM
The other guy in danger of getting voted off - Mark - had been voted off before. He got to come back a few weeks ago.
I just can't believe how much weight they've all lost. It's amazing. I wish I could spend time at that ranch and devote my whole life to getting these pounds off! I'd also love to have that trainer, Bob, yelling at me - he's cute!
Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 7:52 PM
Yeah, Bob is HOT!
I thought Dan was cocky. I was so glad the girls pulled it off and were able to give him the boot. He was so unsuspecting of that. The boys deserved that to take them down a notch. The cake thing was pretty stinkin funny though. I laughed when he was carrying it around and had it on the treadmill and then someone left him a randsome note. That was hilarious.
Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 9:24 PM
Ok I have to agree Bob is amazing and he seems so peaceful but then like a tyrant especially on those last chance work outs. Was I wrong or were the trainers missing from the weighin? That was wierd.
I think it is so cool the two girls were the highest in weight loss for the week and Ally? has so little to go.
And then both of them dropping big numbers. That was encouraging.
I would love at least one woman to be in the top 4.
I do love this show.
Thursday, March 27, 2008, 12:42 AM
I'm just glad the whiny members of the black team got voted off (Brittany and Maggie). It was so annoying to hear them every week say "girls can't lose like guys can". Talk about a defeatist attitude, Alli came back and kicked butt, and Kelly often did well. Just shutup and work harder. And Maggie admitted she overate that week out of stress then when she lost 1lb or stayed the same she was like "Oh, I don't know why that happened, I worked so hard." I know men lose weight easier than women, but geez, I hate whining!!
Dan was arrogant but made me laugh in disbelief.
I'm hoping Alli does well!!
Thursday, March 27, 2008, 8:18 AM
This show is awesome! It is inspiring. I just can't believe the change in these people both physically and emotionally. There has definitely been a surplus of crying this season, which cracks me up. But I don't know why I laugh, sometimes I cry right along with them! On a side note, the book is really good too!
Sunday, March 30, 2008, 5:28 PM
5:28 - what book?
Sunday, March 30, 2008, 6:27 PM
There is a Biggest Loser book that tells the steps they use. It is at Borders and places like Target where they sell books too. There are some good tips and stories in it as well. There is also a cookbook. It makes sense.
Monday, March 31, 2008, 6:34 PM
No matter how much they workout, I just don't understand how they can lose weight so fast, especially after they've lost the first 50lbs or so. I came across a website where they claimed that the contestents actually lost weight over a period of about 8 months rather than 12 weeks, but I couldn't find any corroboration of their information. It does seem a lot more realistic though. I think anyone would be ecstatic to lose 100lbs over 8 months.
Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 9:40 AM
I guess I wouldn't be surprised if the time frames were a little different, but seeing how losing weight is their one and only 'job' right now - their weight loss seems reasonable and it's slowing down for everyone. It's not realistic for your average person, living their lives in the real world, but they're essentially doing boot camp every day for months.
And I agree on the losing 100lbs. No matte how long it took - it has to be an incredible feeling!
Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 3:04 PM
I got the impression that the difference wasn't as dramatic as 12 weeks = 8 months, but I did catch on that their concept of a week wasn't 7 days back in the second season. It's more like 9-10 days. Plus, you don't experience the gap between the finalists leaving the ranch to do it on their own for 3+ months - that's just a week after.
I also get the feeling that most of them have never seriously tried to lose weight before, and afterwards gain it all back because there's this false concept of how "easy" it is to drop 20 lbs in a month.
Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 3:41 PM
I can't wait for tonight's show!!
Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 7:00 PM
Okay whoever commented that they dont know why they make fun of the crying because they sit there and cry with it... I am soooo right there with you!! I sat there and boo hooed tonight. I have no idea why! It was emotional for some reason I guess. They look so good!! This seasons players I am just so in tune with I guess for some reason. Jay is a hottie too. :)
Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 10:07 PM
They really look great though. It is such a change!!! I can't wait til the last show to see how everyone else looks!
Wednesday, April 2, 2008, 7:58 PM
Okay, I think I cried through that whole dang show!
GO GIRLS!!!! That weigh in was awesome! For all of them.
So, who do you want to see in the finale? I like them both, but I'd really love to see a girl win and I think Mark gives them the best chance.
Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 10:10 PM
Girl Power!
I think Alli did AMAZING and I can't imagine a woman ever doing much better than that! I am all for a Girl taking the title - Alli - so vote for Mark to stay!
Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 10:24 PM
I really think Ali looks awesome. Ditto the comment about crying through the whole show, lol.
How does the final work? Who gets the title biggest loser? The person that has lost the highest percentage of weight? How is it determined? I want to know that because I like Roger better than Mark for the final three. But overall, I want Ali to win. I can't wait to see how they all look.
Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 10:49 PM
Well go to the website and vote - that'll explain how one of the finalists wins (percentage of their starting weight). Vote for Mark for the best shot at a girl winning.
Tuesday, April 8, 2008, 11:37 PM
voted for Mark- I hope Ali wins, she looks fabulous. Can't wait til I am her size!
Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 8:50 AM
I think it is ironic that a bunch of overweight americans are sitting on their couches watching other people get fit - talk about biggest loser (if you don't apply it - probably 50% + of viewers) !
Why not watch the finale of ONE season and then devote that hour to cardio each week instead?
Ha ha
Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 2:31 PM
How about if I workout 5 days a week, watch what I eat, AND enjoy sitting on my ass watching a show that motivates me to do better!?
Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 2:33 PM
2:31 sorry to refute you, but I actually work out the entire 2 hours the show is on. I walk at least 5 miles, do sit ups, push ups and so much more, and I have lost a total of 60 lbs, how about you?
Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 7:35 PM
I do the same thing I do my elliptical and then free weights while I watch the show.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 7:48 PM
That's cool last 4 posts - I wasn't talking about that - just pretty much everyone else watching that show - pass the chips !
If it motivates you then good. Everyone else needs a lobotomy.
-2:31
Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 7:56 PM
ok 2:31, I guess I can agree with that
-7:35
Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 10:43 PM
Lobotomy? Cmon...
2:31 sounds like a complete pain in the you know what with nothing better to do. One of those people that fights with everyone on all the threads. Good gosh, I thought I finally found a thread that people didn't have to act like that. I so rarely comment anymore due to the negativity in these threads. I enjoy this thread because I do love the show and we are all talking about the show and how it motivates us and creates some positive changes for us. Then 2:31 logs on here and basically calls us all a bunch of lazy overweight americans. Gimme a break. Go elsewhere please.
Wednesday, April 9, 2008, 11:06 PM
Weight loss TV show irony
11:06 - I am not talking about people who are motivated by the show (did you read my post?), but pretty much everyone else who watches it and does nothing - TV watching has been clearly linked to obesity (see links) - I just think we should appreciate the IRONY before gushing about a weight loss TV show when TV is a big contributor to the problem with American obesity - that is all.

Thursday, April 10, 2008, 1:39 PM
It was still a wet blanket to an otherwise fun and positive thread. Thanks, 2:31 ;)
Thursday, April 10, 2008, 1:48 PM
I know I am a wet blanket - but honestly I gave up TV almost ten years ago and don't miss it (watched plenty in my life for sure) - I use that time to talk to my wife or play with my kids - life is really short - I think it is a big waste because I am a family man and I like to read books and play outside. I read some books about it in college & grad school and it really freaked my out so I quit cold turkey one day...
I just feel like a wandered onto a thread that said to start smoking cause the nicotine helps with weight loss... I know poor analogy, but there is my totally different perspective for ya' - Isn't that why we are here to hear different opinions ?
Thursday, April 10, 2008, 2:09 PM
In the right context different opinions make for great 'conversations.' This was just a fun little thread with the OP asking who loved a show as much as he/she did. It wasn't really a call for opinions on the impact of tv on obesity! That's a whole 'nother thread. I agree with the one poster who said it was kind of a nice break from all the negative, surly threads on here. It's like the people who get all riled up over repeat topics and questions - why even go there if it doesn't apply to you or if it bothers you so much? That's a rhetorical question, btw. I want to get back to the topic at hand!
I think everyone looks freaking amazing! I can't wait to see the other contestants and see how much they've lost and I'm really rooting for either girl to win :)
Friday, April 11, 2008, 12:14 AM
Ditto the last poster. I think the girls look great. Allie's transformation is so awesome. I am amazed. I was floored at how much weight they all lost last week. I wonder how many of them will show up still heavy though (the ones that got kicked off early in the game). That will be interesting to see. I have been motivated for sure by watching.
Friday, April 11, 2008, 8:51 AM
Yay!
I am glad she won =)
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 10:52 AM
I was really suprised by how much weight everyone lost last night...even those from the begininning seemed to lose a good bit. I am definitly happy with the big winners though both bernie and ali deserve it. Already anxious bout next season!!
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 12:28 PM
Anyone think alli looked too thin? I liked the way she looked about seven lbs ago better than last night. Her face was too thin.
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 1:43 PM
I'd like to see Mark put a few pounds back on - his whole face/neck/shoulder area looks all scrawny-chicken, I think he looked best around 190-200.
But I thought Kelly's face looked the worst. Either it needs to catch up to whatever she did in the 6 weeks off the ranch, or she took some drastic temporary pre-finale measure to drop a few (saunas, dyhydrations, extreme calorie restriction, etc), but it was borderline 'gargoyle'. Having said that, her weight loss really kicked in the last few weeks of the show and then in the interim before the finale. I'm so glad she didn't get voted off because she'd have left feeling like she couldn't lose successfully, given her erratic first 2 months.
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 2:14 PM
Nah, I think Ali looks awesome! They all did :) Yay Bernie!!!
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 3:06 PM
Biggest Loser
I love that show it is such an inspiration and a motivator for me. I don't have to lose that much weight but I think anyone can relate to there struggles.
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 7:13 PM
forgot to watch it. A woman finally won? yay!
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 8:41 PM
I thought Ali looked amazing! So happy she won!
Thursday, April 17, 2008, 9:57 AM
On Alli being THIN
Apparently Jillian had to set a botton weight for her. As in, she was not allowed to come to the finale weighing less than 120. She clocked in at 122 and at 5'5" let's assume she has a small frame, her lowerst she should be is 117, but if she is medium build 127 is her lowest. I agree with the PP that said she looked good 7lbs ago, she looks really thin now. I like the look of having a little more than just muscle on the bones, it makes a person look softer.
I am SO happy she won. She worked really hard!
Thank you for the motivation biggest loser.
Thursday, April 17, 2008, 12:04 PM
I wonder how much she'll regain this week in water weight. It seems they do some crazy things the last couple weeks to shed a few more lbs.
Thursday, April 17, 2008, 3:53 PM
I think it is funny it was the season of 1 pound
And Bernie won by 1 pound.
I am so glad ali won. I would have enjoyed kelly winning too, Any girl. I am just so glad it was proven a girl can win. She must be so proud of herself.
I know I would be.
