Lie To Yourself Phase?

I've done diets before, and I've seen where I failed and I've noticed that I sometimes go through a "lie to myself" phase, where when I log my food I neglect certain key points that spell disaster to my diet. This means that in 2 days when I forget all about the chocolate cake I didn't write down because I felt bad about it and myself for going off the plan, I'll think I can have another sinful treat because I failed to record it and see that my food choices for the week are starting to sink my goal. OR I can casually overlook the butter and cream sauce on some meat and still classify the dish as "healthy" since I'm getting protein, when in reality I don't need all the butter and fat that will start to sabotage my diet. This starts a rolling snowball effect, where my diet plans and progress go spectacularly to pieces. I call this the "lie to myself" phase, because I am ignoring the reality of a situation and beginning a bad habit in that scenario. I've done this more than once.

I wrote all of that to ask: do you do this too? What motivations and influences help keep you on the "straight and narrow" road of achieving your goal? have you ever become your own worst enemy in achieving them?
