Anyone from Baltimore?
I'll be going to Johns Hopkins as a freshman this fall and I'm moving from New York City to Baltimore. I'm really nervous and was wondering what it's like there, what changes it expect, how different my accent will be, what will be really different, so on and so forth.
Also, supposedly the crime rate there is six times higher than NYC. Any ideas on that? Should I be nervous? I mean, I'm used to taking certain precautions (don't walk alone at night, know which neighborhoods are OK, etc) from living in NYC and hanging around Brooklyn/Bronx all the time, but I wasn't sure if it'd be much different.
Thanks in advance, everyone!!

If you don't get much here - maybe check out fodors.com (go to TALK link.) People often post about cities where they're moving and asking for input. Good luck!

The area around Johns Hopkins is really nice. You just have to be careful, like you said you already are. You will be fine. The crime rate is high, but only in the bad inner city sections, stay out of there!!!
Good luck!

Rent the John Waters movie "Pecker" for a quirky taste of Baltimore. It will give you a glimpse of Charm City compared to the Big Apple. If you end up liking this movie, you're going to love Baltimore.

You will love B-more!!! I have lived here my whole life and there are tons of things to do, you just have to find them! There are tons of museums, theatres, restaurants etc. in the downtown area and there is pretty good public transportation. The area around Hopkins is very nice, but like any neighborhood you have to be careful at night. You will learn pretty quickly where you should and shouldn't be in the city....if you know what i mean! Good luck!

Baltimore has tons of students and you'll be hanging out with them. The crime is usually confined to very specific parts of the city which you won't really be in. Since you're from New York, you probably know the basics - don't use an atm at night or anytime that you see someone else nearby that looks shady and above all, avoid avoid avoid conflict. Never try to be the hero, if it looks threatening or shady, walk away. But these are just for any young girl moving to the city - you're going to have a great time. It's full of really smart people.
