Anyone watch Dr OZ yesturday on Oprah?

I just thought it was so interesting. The topic ws on age-defying tips. But what I found most helpful was when he was talking about something I do everyday...and I do it wrong! I use Olive oil for cooking and apparently I am not getting the whole benefit from it's use. I always pour some in the pan put on stove top and then add Chicken (or what ever food) anyway Dr OZ taught me that I am actually taking away the oxidation of the Olive oil , like burning off or heating up the oil to the point it looses it's benefit. He said to put it on the food to be cooked first and then put that food in the pan. Just found it interesting,
Does anyone else do this ? Did you see the show? Any other tips/topics he dicussed that you found interesting?

I just happen to turn it on & heard about the flax seed, I didn't know you needed to grind it down to get the true benefits. No one tells you these things, you just think hey I am using it, my body can benefit, but if not used the proper way, then its like it wasn't used at all. I thought it was a good show.

I saw it. I'm going to follow his tips on vitamins. That whole thing confuses me... so it seems like you need:

1. Mulitvitamin w/iron if you still get your period.

2. Vitamin D

3. Calcium w/ magnesium

4. DHEA omega three

Thats all I can remember...

Oprah show

Yeah, good show. I knew about the olive oil thing because I heard Dr. Jordan Rubin saying it months ago. Rubin says olive oil is unstable in heat, he goes with cooking with a small amount of coconut oil. The olive oil breaks down and you get no benefit. Put on food after cooking for benefit . About all the cooking shows put olive oil in first, so I guess thats another reason people are confused. I need to get a coffee grinder, I have flaxseeds but you only get the benefit when the oil comes out, sometimes I take the flaxseed oil. Dr. Oz and Roizen are always good and helpful, and those antioxidants are the bomb!!

I actually don't use olive oil at all for frying/sauteeing because it's not so good in heat. instead, I use almond oil, which is made for high heat, and then use olive oil for salad dressings instead.

I knew about the flaxseed. I buy it pre-ground at my bulk food store. You can use the store bought oil, but then you don't get the fibre. There's a thread around here about how do you flax with some great ideas on how to use it in your diet.

However, the whole segment with the eliptical kinda cheesed me off. I thought that was poorly done. And he used the old/not so individualised method for determining heart rate.

However, advocating sex at least twice a week was a great idea- just wished he'd said a minimum of 4 times a week ;)

I've been to Italy and Greece.. and they use olive oil for EVERYTHING! Want to "butter" your bread? Olive Oil. Salad Dressing? Olive Oil. Spaghetti sauce? Olive oil.

A tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of oil are equal in calories (about 130). Two of those? With salt? On bread? Um...are you on PT to lose weight??

10pm - lol - I thought the same thing, but then there are those with higher calorie allowances that can eat that and be fine...damn them!

I was just amazed by how well the women in their 60's looked vs. that 40+ year old smoker. It pays to take care of yourself!

The 60+ aged women looked amazing! I thought the first woman was in her early 30's before she told her age.

I am incorporating lots of Dr. Oz's suggestions in my own life. I feel great!

olive oil

I found this information on an Olive Oil website that I thought was interesting:

Olive Oil Myth: Olive oil loses its benefits when heated

The Facts: Excessively heating olive oil will evaporate the alcohols and esters which make up its delicate taste and fragrance. Heating olive oil will not change its health aspects, only the flavor. Use a cheaper olive oil which doesn't have much flavor to begin with if you want to fry with it, add a more flavorful olive oil after cooking or at the table.

Is Dr. Oz wrong?
