thought it was great!
I have an idea for us to try out if you're all game. Every semester we have some crackpot come and do a key note address for us at our big faculty development meeting. This year was notable primarily because the woman was completely off her rocker, but that doesn't mean she didn't have anything valuable to say. Essentially, she spoke to us about the value of play, encouragement, and recognition in creating motivation for ourselves and reducing stress. One of the things she shared that I find myself doing is giving myself rockstar salutes everytime I make a good choice or I feel like I need acknowledgement and no one is there to give it to me. It's the whole fist in the air "whoo" thing, or maybe the reach up and pull down "YESSSSSSSSSSSSS, I ROCK" thing--or maybe more suttle if I'm in public (like I'll snap and whisper "rockstar!")
The idea is that rockstars are the master's of self-congratualtion, and if nobody else is going to congratulate us for each of the small victories in our day, we may as well be rockstars and do it for ourselves. It's totally goofy, but it does make me smile. I find myself giving them to other people, too--like if a student has a good idea I'll say, "Rockstar Salute to you--ROCKSTAR!" and everybody laughs, but then today a student said something in class, and when I tried to move on she said, "I'm pretty sure that deserves a rockstar." Heck yah, it did! And then I remembered one of the other things this crazy woman said to us.
She said that famous people are the only ones who get standing ovations, and that we're all getting ripped off--our daily struggles are every bit as difficult and therefore noteworthy as anyone else's. She said the only reason we don't get them is fear. We're afraid of the attention that would come from receiving one, and we're afraid to ask for one--to request acknowledgement even if it's what we really need. Sometimes we're even afraid people will think we're crazy if we give one to someone else--heck we're even too shy sometimes to simply compliment another person even though we know it will probably MAKE their day. Well, I KNOW I'm crazy (in a good way, I keep telling myself), so I'm putting it out here!
I thought it might be fun to give each other some rockstar salutes and some standing Os--so feel free to ask for one when you need it or deserve it, and pass them along--you never know how much it might brighten somebody's day. Somedays we deserve one for getting out of bed on time, and we should get it!
Feel free to cut and paste this or pass it along to folks in your other groups if you think they'll find it amusing. Just make sure to give me a big ol' ROCKSTAR if you do. :) -Alester
