GROSS WARNING! Don't read this if you're eating: mercy killing?

Oh man, the saddest, grossest thing just happened! The lady that owns the barn where I keep my horse told me she had just knocked down the barn swallow nest. I knew there were young birds in there, because I've watched the mom feeding them every day for the last week or 2. I was wondering how she could do something like that to baby birds. She told me there were 2 in the nest, and they looked really unhealthy. She said: " I threw them on the manure pile, if they can make it from there, good for them." I decided I wanted to go see them. They were there, half burried in manure, squirming around, and obviously way too young to survive. I picked one up to get a closer look, and was appalled to see a large maggot eating it alive!!!! I almost puked and set that one down. The other one seemed to be moving a little more, so I picked that one up, and was horrified to see like 6 maggots eating it alive. I couldn't stand it, I ran to the barn, almost in tears and grabbed a shovel. This is something I never thought I could do, but it was obvious they weren't going to make it, and I couldn't stand the thought of dying that slow, painful death. I slammed the shovel down with all my might, praying that they would die instantly. I belive they did ( thank god). I had to come home and wash my hands 3 times, and have a long shower, but I still feel creepy.

I don't know why there were only 2 ( I thought there were more) and if they were dying before she knocked it down, or because they fell 7 fricken feet, but don't you think this is a cruel thing to do? Swallows eat a ton of bugs, and even if you don't want it there, can't you just wait a few weeks until they leave the nest!!!?? The other barn I work at, my boss nailed up special boards under the nests so the poop doesn't fall down, and he and his granddaughter enjoy watching them grow up. This makes me smile! Sometimes people need to have a little compassion! The only thing I ever kill on purpose is mosquitos and other biting insects, and even then I hope they die a quick death, for they're only doing what creatures do, after all! Oh yeah, and apparently I kill baby birds now too. Sigh. I was coming in to have dinner, but I'm going to have to wait a while to get my appetite back. Sorry if this totally grossed you out, but I did warn you. Please share your thoughts.
