Do I NEED to join a gym? How many of you work out at home?
I am considering joining our local YMCA. It will cost me $50 per month. I have to decide by the end of September (while they are waving their fees.)
I have a treadmill here at home, plus a variety of handweights/bands. Plus, I enjoy workout DVDs, and am looking into Tae Bo and Turbo Jam.
My dilemma, is: Do I join the gym, or save my money and work out at home on my treadmill and with my weights and DVDs?
On one hand, I would love to save the money and just start my own "routine" here at home. Winter will be setting in soon, and I am afraid I will balk at those cold, snowy days and not go. I have a little one in tow (2 and 1/2) so that will be an added part of the job of leaving the house. I am also a good 90 lbs overweight - slightly socially phobic due to this, especially in a gym setting.
On the other hand, I am a stay at home mom, so I could benefit from getting out around others. If I get a family membership, my children could also benefit from programs at the Y. I may actually make some like-minded friends (do people socialize and talk at the gym?) who could keep me afloat in my new healthy lifestyle.
What should I do? I'd really like to make this decision. I probably won't bother buying the workout DVDs if I join the gym. Or, I could do a little of both - some gym, some at home.
