don't know what to do now, help

i am about 15 lbs from my goal weight as of now. a few months ago, against better judgment, i started a very low cal diet, VERY low cal, ran an hour at a time several days a week, did strength training, and lost about 5 lbs. but one day, i was just so hungry, i binged. and continued to binge.. and gained the 5 lbs back. i dont know if, had i continued the low cal diet and severe exercising, would i have lost more? or maybe i was just losing muscle and water... anyways.. i binged mindlessly for about 2 months. about 2 months ago, i started back eating healthy, not too little, about 1400 cals a day. running, doing HIIT, doing strength training 3 days a week, and i can tell my clothes are just slightly looser on me, but i am actually at the same weight. am i just gaining muscle and thats why im gaining weight? i want to lose fat, im not necessarily concerned with gaining muscle. i just want to know, why i lost weight when i did the "wrong" approach, and now that im doing it "healthy" and within a healthy calorie range, im not really seeing any different results? should i up or down my cals? do more exercise? its so frustrating to me, i read all these websites that say, dont take your cals too low!! but then my father, in his wisdom, says, you cant eat much and be trim. you have to sometimes be a little hungry to lose weight. and i agree, to a certain point. so, if anyone has had this experience, please help! i have an important deadline for losing this weight, and i really need some advice... thanks!
