another calorie question... ingredients

When figuring out the calries of something homemade, can you just figure out the calories of each individual ingredient and add them together?

Of course, I'll be sure to account for the different serving sizes, etc.

This is what I've been doing... counting the calories for the entire amount of each ingredient, then adding them together so I have the total calories for the whole thing. Then I just figure out what fraction of the whole I'm eating (1/4 of it, for example) and assume that I've consumed 1/4 of the calories.

Am I right, or am I missing something?
