understanding gym equipment???

Hi
Im hoping someone can help me out in understanding the machines at the gym?!!!
I am fairly new to he gym, and my goals and aims are to tone up, especially my legs!
The fitness instructor at the gym has done me a programme, but i would like to understand it!
Let me speak out the cross trainer 1st, its a precor one, not the one with the crossramp that has the recline option on it, it has resistence button which i think goes up to 20, i think it has 8 programmes, and a smartrate.
My programme is on interval and the lowest resistence, and its very easy. When i asked my instructor if i could up the resistence, so i would feel that im actually working out, she said she didnt think i should because im not on a weight loss programme, im on a toning programme, and the resistence should be kept low for toning. Idont understand?
Surely this isnt right???
