Weight Gain After Resistance Training

I am currently trying to five pounds between now and January 1st. So far I've managed to drop a steady one pound a week by doing only cardio. I'm an ex-athlete and like to feel strong so i decided to add weight lifting back into my routine. I'm 29 and female.

So after four weeks of steady decline the scale is moving in the opposite direction. I know that muscle weighs more than fat....my question is how long shoudl I expect this extra weight gain to last ? From what I've read the weight gain can be attributed to water retention as the muscles heal.

I don't want to stop resistance training but I do want to continue to loose weight. Just wondering if this will continue for a while since I haven't done any serious weight training in a few months.
