Can PT group members become real friends?

I’m a long-time PT member and have naturally gotten to know my PT group members well and come to care about them. I’ve tried several groups on PT, but I admit that I lose interest when the topic is always about health, fitness or nutrition. The group that I’m in right now is more open and we share the ups and downs in our lives. Geographically, I thought it might never be possible to meet these members in person. However, I will be traveling to a nearby city of one of the group members in the near future and I’ve wondered about asking her if she’d like to meet over coffee and enjoy this rare opportunity to meet in person.

My problem: I think my feelings would be hurt if she said no. Another group member has expressed interest in the idea of meeting in person, but this particular member has always been silent about the idea. We have a lot in common and I think that if we lived nearby friendship would come easily. I don’t know if she’s been quiet about the idea of meeting because it’s a bit scary to meet someone you only know online (what if they turn out to be the boogie-man?) or if it’s because she prefers the more anonymous setting of a strictly online group.

I’d hate to miss a wonderful opportunity because I’m worried about hurt feelings, even though I know if she turned the invite down she would do it graciously. Our group is struggling a little right now and logging less often, though we remain close. In the back of mind, I wonder if maybe we’ve come pretty close to reaching the end of what we can accomplish through PT and with each other’s help. I’m torn between letting go and hanging on. Any advice?
