Coeliac Disease V Wheat Allergy

There is a common misconception that wheat allergy is the same as Coeliac disease, so, in defence of Coeliacs...and our need to be particularly fussy in our eating, I have copied my reply to such a misconception in a previous thread.

"Coeliac disease is not a 'Wheat allergy"

Coeliac disease is a "Gluten Intolerance"...we are not "allergic" to gluten.

Gluten breaks down the lining of our small intestine which looses its villi and becomes permeable, especially to protein, so that protein is lost from muscles etc. Anaemia and vitamin deficiency are also important consequences.

There is also an 8-14% chance of Coeliacs eventually developing cancer of their small bowel which is almost always undetectable until it is incurable. Very strict avoidance of gluten is thought to reduce the incidence of this cancer.

Unfortunately proof of Coeliac Disease, and differentiation from wheat and other allergies, is difficult. Blood tests at present are not yet accurate but gene tests are significant to some extent. In New Zealand endoscopic and small bowel biopsy changes are required in order to be recognised as a "Coeliac" for the Coeliac society and by the Health dept for subsidies for GF food ( which is expensive )"

PS I am also fed up with Airlines which provide meals for all sorts of diets but omit Gluten Free meals, although it is medically necessary for Coeliacs...unlike vegans or vegetarians !
