I started out as a traditional psychotherapist, but came to appreciate hypnosis as a rapid method for changing habits and attitudes. I love doing hypnosis and my boring voice is perfect for the job; clients quickly respond to my droning.
I'm also a writer and my facility with language helps because choosing a precise word is crucial when offering a hypnotic suggestion.
Folks usually come to me as a last resort. They've tried to stop smoking many different ways or they've tried to overcome their fear of flying for years. They are surprised at how easy it is to respond to a hypnotic suggestion and how quickly hypnosis helps them master a situation.
Every hour is different. A woman came before her appearance on Jeopardy! she wanted hypnosis to remember to smile, and to have good recall and to have quick thumb action. Fear of public speaking brings many salespeople and managers to my office. Plenty of people come for hypnosis because they get nervous in social situations; others become overwhelmed with fear before exams. Hypnosis helps without delving into your past. It simply deals with the here and now.
Medical hypnosis is valuable because it encourages quick healing and recovery. Clinical trials have proved the value of hypnosis in particular medical situations. Everyone is able to be hypnotized to some extent or another; some people are extremely hypnotizable and they can actually have surgery with no anesthesia but the hypnotist's voice.
I encourage clients to bring a tape recorder with them and that way they can replay our session as often as they need to and dont have to bother returning to my office.
Most situations need one session; some need two. The only one needing more visits is food control. With smoking I can forbid you to ever pick up a cigarette, but since you need to eat every day suggestions for food cannot be as forbidding. I can suggest that you'll never eat by the light of the refrigerator, or you'll never eat standing up, or you'll think that broccoli tastes like chocolate, but you'll still need intermittent boosts either in person or by CD.
My role as a hypnotist is similar to that of a coach; I'm there to help clients reach their goal. Being a hypnotist is never boring.

About the Author
Roberta Temes, (pronounced Temmis), Ph.D. is Clinical Assistant Professor,
Department of Psychiatry, at Downstate Medical School, New York City.
She had a private practice in New York City in psychotherapy, coaching, and
medical hypnosis for 30 years, and has now relocated that practice to Westfield, NJ.
Temes is the author of many self-help books and psychology books, as well as
the first medical school textbook about hypnosis. She is also the author of
the best-selling book, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Hypnosis. Her latest
book is called, The Tapping Cure.
Dr. Temes lectures around the country at corporate meetings, at medical
conferences, and at health spas, too. She did a stint as a columnist for a
country newspaper where she wrote about acquiring a country house and the
trauma of adjusting to fresh air, quiet, and nature. For
twenty years Temes wrote a monthly column for True Story magazine.
Dr. Roberta, as her clients call her, is now in practice in NJ where she
lives with her husband. Her 3 children are grown, with families of their own.
