i'm convinced it is easier to stop drinking than stop eating sugary foods

I am trying all sorts of diet changes and I recently stopped drinking entirely, after being a moderate and occaisonally heavier drinker. That was easy. I have also decided to try cutting way down on sugar of all forms. Way way difficult an I am craving the stuff, having withdrawal symptoms. I can see pies, cake, ice cream. I'm hanging tough because I am already reaping the benefits, but I wanted to give this oberservation.

too right!

I'm totally with you there. My husband is fighting a relatively mild alcoholism with a lot more ease than I'm fighting my pint-a-day ice cream habit. He can rely on the social aspect of drinking to keep him from drinking alone, but who eats ice cream socially? Maybe that's a cultural habit we could start!

I only let myself eat ice cream if it's for dessert with my husband - never alone!

Any rules I make about sweets often end up like my college rules about smoking. When I established the 'I'll only smoke when I drink' rule...I ended up going out for drinks a lot more. The sugar and sweets have been a bear to give up! It would be easier for me to give up meat.

I found this recent study interesting. The linked study shows that, at least in rats, sugar is more addictive than cocaine. Rats preferred sugar to cocaine and rats that were previously addicted to cocaine switched to sugar when given the choice.
