anyone doing the american diabetic exchange system

I'm not diabetic (although my family has a history) and am not really overweight either, but I"m trying to adopt a healthier lifestyle. My doctor suggested that I follow the diabetic exchange system where eat a certain number of servings in a group (Starch, Fat, Skim Milk, Lean Meat, Veggies, Fruits) based on what calorie diet you plan to follow. It's supposed to give you a more well-rounded and lowfat/lowsugar diet. I was just wondering if anyone out there is doing this and how it's going...

Yes, I've been doing it since the beginning of the year. At first it felt like "eating by numbers", but now I find myself eating very well-rounded meals without it being an effort. As someone who was an occasional fruit-eater, a rare vegetable eater, and a little screwed up from the high protein/low carb fad, it has done a great job of getting me into a normal, healthy eating pattern.

I wouldn't call it low-fat or low-sugar though. It's more about moderation than restriction, and the frequency and intensity of cravings (which have a lot to do with restriction) have been reduced by about 2/3.

Thanks for bringing this up. My husband has a family history of diabetes and his weight has gone up lately while mine has gone down. I'm going to see if they have a book.
