shin splints

I'm currently training for a marathon and have developed shin splints. Does anyone have experiece in this area? How to care for or eliminate shin splints. With a marathon coming up I hate to stop training. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When I had this in high school they recommended a short respite and aggressively stretching the calves. They said it was due to a muscle imbalance between the calves and the anterior shin area. I used to "hang" off the edge of a step, both feet simultaneously as well as individually. I guess you could also consider the surface you're running on--pavement vs. treadmill vs. a dirt path and consider going for a "softer" option for awhile!
