Weighing In Every Day?

I read yesterday in the news that a study came out that said that people who wiegh in every day do better with weight loss. I weigh in once a week, as do most people. I'd be curious to hear opinions on this.

I also wonder if the weekly weigh in has been socialized by Weight Watchers. They do, so everyone does it.

I'm so glad that you brought this up. I've tried both ways. I have tried only weighing myself once a week, and I've also tried weighing myself pretty much every day. I have to say that, in my opinion, that newspaper article is right.

My reasoning for that, is because from my own experience, stepping on the scale every day was me facing myself. It was me having to own up to the truth. If I weighed more or the same as the previous day, it only gave me added motivation to try harder today and the next day. When I was only weighing in once a week, my weight during the week was a mystery to me.

I know that if you weigh yourself everyday you HAVE to realize that you cannot be as harsh on your body because, yes your weight does fluctuate for a variety of reasons (bloating, menstrual cycle, water weight, etc.). HOWEVER, for me, it was like I said - a way of owning up to myself and the truth and providing added motivation and also satisfaction when seeing that scale go down.

Weighing Everyday

I read this same article....

While I appreciate the idea, I don't know about anyone else, but once I start weighing in everyday, I become obsessed with my weight, and dieting begins to control my life.

I measure how well my jeans fit, this is how I "weigh" myself.

I'm glad you posted this too.

I weigh myself almost every day and I feel the same as the above poster that it makes me do better if I see that it's up. I don't write it here because I'm afraid I'll be viewed as obsessive, but I'm not. I just like to know where I am each day.

I get on the scale most days, but have an official weigh-in once a week. There are too many factors that could make it fluctuate from one day to the next. But it is a motivator!

I weigh every day too and I think it keeps me on track. I always take into consideration what I ate the day/night before. Did I have too much sodium? Am I bloated? Am I about to start my period? It makes me more aware of my eating habits and encourages me to make better choices. Some days I wonder if I'm being neurotic about it but as a whole, it works well for me. Keeps me in touch with my daily/weekly/long term goals. Dieting does not control my life, but I control my diet. There's only one me and I've got to take care of myself.

every day

i weight myself everyday, but that helped it become a non-event.
it can be a motivator, but mostly, it's just habit. then i don't worry about it too much, and i only write down my weight every two weeks ( i feel like it's the best indicator)

I definitely step on the scale almost every day. I officially record once a week, but looking at the numbers every day keeps me on track.

I step on the scale every day, and record it on here every day. It helps me because I don't have far to go - maybe 5lbs, maybe less - and if I checked only once a week, I'd probably be discouraged. Since I joined PEERTrainer last May, I've lost about 3lbs, but those 3lbs are a huge change for me! It's also the first 5-month period, probably of my life, in which the scale went down, not up! It helps me on a daily basis. If I weigh more than the day before, I'm more conscious about my diet, and, if I'm less, then I don't want to do anything to "ruin" the results! But, the above poster was right that you can't be too critical of yourself in that case. Tuesday I weighed 2lbs less than I did Wednesday. I know very well that that's water weight or excess sodium or something, I did not overeat by 7200 calories in one day! But, you need to have a clear enough mind to be able to realize that you didn't just gain that weight. Today, I was down one of the two pounds. Plus, I think I was dehydrated Tuesday morning.

If I had a ton of weight to lose, and could count on it coming off relatively quickly - i.e. I was far over weight and recently changed a number of habits - I think I'd like to weigh in once a week, because then you'd see a bigger change on the scale than if you weighed day-to-day. I think it differs by your personality and your situation.

I do it daily, but I know I fluctuate by a few pounds so I'm still looking at the trend, not the one day change. You can sort of tell, usually. But I agree that there are people who can't help overreacting and they are better off with weekly weigh-ins.

Once a week

I weigh once a week. I tried doing it everyday but that got me obsessed with it and I cudnt think of anything else the whole day..

Also weighing every day led to depression bouts if I increased due to other reasons like water retention, more salt intake or whatever..
So I stick to once a week and thats what my doc recommends too!

Daily, but only weekly counts

I weigh myself daily, before breakfast for consistency.

But your weight will fluctuate during the week, depending on how late you ate, etc. So I only "count" the monday weigh-ins, if that makes sense.

I weigh myself every day in the morning while naked and I chart it, at the end of the week I average it out. This seems to work for me, since salt and water & of course that time of month has a big affect on me.

I weigh myself anyday I go to the gym which is anywhere from 3 to 6 times per week. (I don't really trust my digital scale at home.) I keep a sheet of paper in my gym bag and write down the weight for that day. Yes, sometimes I'm up or down a couple pounds, but as someone else said, I watch for the trend. Looking at my weight for the first several entries (back in July) and then panning down the page to my current entries, it's really great to see a downward slope - from the 140's to the 130's and now into the 120's!!
And I don't become obsessed. On the contrary, I know that a random pound gained here and there isn't a big deal because I'm still losing in general. If my weight does happen to be up for more than a few days in a row, then I know I need to examine my eating habits a little more closely and/or step up my workouts a bit to compensate for the gaining trend.

I weigh everyday, just so that things don't get out of hand. I am not currently trying to loose weight, but I have lost 40 pounds since my highest weight. Weighing everyday simply became a reminder to me to eat healthy and exercise.

BUT - I also get obsessed with it sometimes, which is not good. I sometimes have to back off for a couple of days, and that seems to set things right in my mind.

It's all a matter of personal choice and what works best for each of us.

I used to weigh myself every day. It was fine when i was losing weight. Then I stopped losing weight and got too discouraged every time I weighed myself. Now I'm back to weighing myself once a week. I know that I'm not doing as well with losing, but until I get back to that place, this is where i am.

I weigh myself everyday it helps motivate me for the day. I don't work and am retired so the fridge is handy to me at all times. I've only had the scales go up once since I started doing this (since I bought some scales lol). The day I did gain 3 pounds I looked at my log for the past week and seen what I did wrong. That chocolate bar did it!
