You want to train with a wide grip -- out to 81 cm, a point which is etched on standard powerlifting bars. By using the 81 cm. grip, you use the strongest combination of musches for bench pressing.

If your using a narrow grip or shoulder width apart elbows should remain inward. A wider grip elbow will go out or goalpost shape. If you have shoulder issues narrow may be better for the front deltoid & a modification on either grip don't take your elbows below the plane of your shoulders.
