Pushups-- reps vs a lot at one time

Question- I am a guy and have been doing pushups because it is what I have time for. I have started to be able to do more and more in a row. I'm up to 42 right now up from 15-20 when I started this.

I'm curious what the different benefits are of focusing on a high consecutive number vs doing a lot of reps of sets.

My personal trainer has me "drop and give him 20" about 4-5x throughout our hour together. But I'm a girl -- I don't know if they train boys and girls differently for weight loss.
