Burning calories

I want to burn a minimim of 500 calories per work out.

On days I can't get to the gym, is there a way to calculate calories burned when biking, walking or running outdoors or using a stationary bike (that does not have a calorie counter)? Or when doing Yoga or pilates or any other dvd based workout?

I recently got a heart-rate monitor and it is fabulous. In most cases, on-line calculators have been fairly close to my actual calorie burn, but not exact. Your age, height, weight and heart rate are all factors.

I have found as a very, very general guideline that if I use a 1-10 rating scale, it's actually close to how many calories I am burning per minute. For example, laying down stretching is like a 1 (easy) and only burns like 1 calorie per minute. Walking briskly is around a 5 (I'm moderately challenged) and burns about 5 calories per minute. Sprinting or jumping rope is going all out at a 10, and can burn up to 10 calories or more per minute.
