What do I eat?
November 15th, 2005
One of my friends asked me this today to get meal ideas. This is what I responded:
OK,
this is actually easy for me because my diet hardly ever changes. I am
one of those people who has my favorites and eats them almost every day
with few variations.
Breakfast is always one of two things.
During the week I have a big bowl of cereal (and I mean BIG) for
breakfast. Because I eat a lot of it, I stick with the lowest
fat/calorie choices that I can. My hands-down favorite is Kelloggs
Tiger Power, followed by Honey Nut Cheerios. And I use skim milk. On
the weekends, we go to a bagel place and I get a whole wheat bagel with
veggie cream cheese but I ask them to go easy on the cream cheese.
Mid-morning
we have a short break, just enough for me to have a quick snack, and I
usually have a box of raisins. I don't eat enough fruit and I read that
in a parenting magazine as a trick to get your kids to eat more fruit.
I like raisins, so it works out fine. I also drink water through the
morning.
For lunch, I either have a sandwich, a Lean Cuisine (my
favorite is sesame chicken), or a salad from the school cafeteria. They
have a good Chinese chicken salad but I only use about 1/2 of the
dressing packet because if I used the whole thing it would be 16 grams
of fat. If I have a sandwich, I get turkey on whole wheat with lettuce,
tomato and mustard. I'll also have a snack bag of Baked Lay's or a few
pretzels or low fat Wheat Thins, and then a Slim Fast snack bar (peanut
butter crunch bar tastes just like Butterfinger) or a WW one-point
chocolate cake snack. And I try to only drink water at lunch but once
in a while I'll have a Diet Coke.
When we eat dinner at home my
husband usually grills chicken and we have that with salad and some
steamed veggies. On my salad I use a low-fat dressing and I don't put
butter on my veggies, instead I use lemon or a little teriyaki sauce.
Sometimes we'll make spaghetti with whole wheat pasta. If we eat out I
almost always get a Chinese chicken salad wherever we go - it's my
hands down favorite. If I had one for lunch and we go out for dinner,
I'll get chicken or shrimp with vegetables and salad (you can get that
pretty much anyplace) or sometimes I'll get a turkey burger, no cheese,
with salad instead of fries. Again I try to drink water most of the
time but now and then I'll get a Diet Coke.
I love dessert and
don't feel complete after dinner unless I have something sweet. If
we're at home, I keep a variety of desserts in the freezer, like WW
Smart Ones double chocolate fudge cake or Mississippi mud pie, or
Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. If I'm out, I go to a local yogurt
place for a non-fat frozen yogurt, or to Baskin Robbins for one of
their low fat ice creams. They have a good one called Espresso 'n'
Cream and also a no-sugar-added chocolate chocolate chip. Always get
the "child" size in a cup, not a cone.
